AI Mode query fan-out: audit content coverage without creating duplicate pages

    2026-09-10·10 min read

A complex query is not always resolved by a definition. Someone comparing a tool may need to check permissions, limits, costs and a way to leave the service. Having an article that mentions those words does not demonstrate that your website answers the whole decision.

Query fan-out helps explain why it is worth reviewing that set of needs. But it does not turn a brainstorming list into Google data or justify publishing fifty similar pages. The useful editorial task is more concrete: identify what information is missing, where it belongs and what evidence would close the gap.

This guide is for content and SEO leads who already have a published corpus. You will finish with a coverage matrix and decisions about existing pages, not an automatic list of new posts. The method and example are original Mentio proposals, not Google requirements or client results.

What query fan-out means and what you cannot infer

Google explains that AI Mode and AI Overviews may run several related searches across subtopics and sources to develop an answer. Techniques and results can differ between experiences. Source: Google's AI features documentation.

That does not reveal which specific searches ran for the answer you just saw. A list of “likely subqueries” is a hypothesis, even when a tool presents it with many decimal places.

The audit question is not “did we guess the fan-out?”. It is “can someone resolve this task using our evidence without filling gaps or combining incompatible conditions?”. That distinction lets you work even when the system's internal path is unknown.

    Separate observations, hypotheses and unknowns

Open three records before analyzing pages:

Type What to store What not to claim
Observation Visible answer, displayed links, date and test conditions That you saw every retrieved source
Editorial hypothesis Facets that might be needed to resolve the task That these are Google's internal subqueries
Unknown Invisible retrievals, internal selection and unproven reasons That an absent link proves the page was not consulted

Keep the original task wording. Record language, country, surface and session state that you can actually verify. If a condition is missing, write “unverified”. Do not complete it from memory to make the record look perfect.

An observed answer may expose a condition you overlooked. Add it as a candidate and justify why it belongs to the task; do not automatically turn everything a model says into a buyer requirement.

Start with a decision and its constraints

Our hypothetical example is a twelve-person design agency choosing a project management tool. It needs to give external clients access and export tasks if it changes providers. We will not recommend a real brand or invent commercial terms.

Write the intended outcome: “rule out options that fail the requirements before requesting a trial”. Then fix the boundaries: twelve internal members, clients who must not see other projects, and a usable exit path for the data.

Do not immediately mix in questions such as “what is project management?”, “how do you organize an agency?” or “how do you migrate one hundred thousand records?”. Those may matter elsewhere, but they change the decision or scope. Include them here only when user evidence shows that they block this task.

    Turn constraints into testable facets

A facet is not a keyword variation. It is a question whose answer can change a decision. “Client access” and “external users” might share a facet; “what can be exported?” introduces another test.

Connect entities with actions and conditions:

    • External client: can see one project, but not necessarily every project.
    • Internal member: uses a license whose cost depends on the plan and billing terms.
    • Export: contains particular fields, in a format and under specified conditions.
    • Task: may contain comments and attachments that do not always leave together.

Before accepting a facet, ask the team to complete this sentence: “We might rule the option out if…”. If nobody can explain which decision changes, you probably found vocabulary rather than an independent need.

Start with a short list. Review available, authorized support tickets, sales questions or interviews without copying personal data into the publication. A model can suggest alternatives, but it cannot replace that check.

Define what sufficient evidence looks like

Do not mark a facet as covered because its name appears in an H2. Record the URL, section, precise claim, verification date and conditions. A generic documentation link is insufficient if the reader must guess where the answer lives.

For permissions, useful evidence could be a table distinguishing guest and member access. For cost, you need the rule applicable to twelve members, currency, billing period and any guest charges. This guide does not provide vendor prices: it describes what must be checked.

Also classify provenance. A service rule requires an authoritative, current source; your own test should explain its procedure and limits. If you cannot access a behavior to verify it, leave that part unverified.

Clear presentation helps communicate what you have already checked. The guide to content that AI can cite covers that writing task; this matrix first establishes whether a defensible answer exists.

    Build a section-level coverage matrix

Define states before scoring. “Covered” means evidence answers the agreed condition. “Partial” answers only part of it. “Missing” has no sufficient evidence. “Outdated” needs a freshness check. “Contradictory” contains incompatible claims. “Out of scope” does not belong to this version of the task.

The following table is invented to demonstrate the method. Its pages are hypothetical documents, not new routes you need to create.

Facet Hypothetical owning page Initial state Action
Project separation for each client Permissions guide, guests section Covered Retain evidence and conditions
Scope of task exports Export help, field table Covered Keep the test and date
Cost for twelve members and guests Pricing page, licensing rules Partial Clarify how guests are treated
Exportable comments and attachments Export help Missing Run an authorized test
Difference between guest and member Permissions guide and sales FAQ Contradictory Confirm the rule and correct both
No-commitment trial for the agency Sales FAQ Outdated Review current terms
Automated large-scale migration No owner within this task Out of scope Keep outside the denominator

A row may point to two pages, but it needs one clear owner for resolving the fact. Linking incompatible documents does not fix a contradiction.

Deduplicate by decision, not by similar wording

Group formulations when they share an acceptance condition and the same evidence. “Can clients log in?” and “are external guests supported?” do not require separate articles if both are resolved by the access explanation.

Keep seemingly adjacent questions separate when they change the outcome. “Can tasks be exported?” and “are attachments preserved?” could have different answers. Do not merge those facets just because they share the verb export.

Assign an owning URL to each stable answer. One page can cover several facets, and a short explanation can link to more detailed documentation. For overall page architecture, use the GEO content cluster guide; this audit does not rebuild that architecture from scratch.

Decide when to repair a section and when to open another task

    Finding Editorial decision
The answer exists but is buried Improve discoverability and the contextual link
A condition is missing within the same decision Complete the owning section
Two formulations share evidence and an outcome Keep one answer and consolidate references
Facts conflict or need a freshness check Resolve the fact before expanding content
Another task has an independently useful outcome Evaluate a separate brief and audit overlap again
Only the query wording changes Do not create a URL for that variation

Google warns against creating content for every variation or fan-out primarily to manipulate results. It also says special AI markup and artificial content chunking are unnecessary. Source: Google's AI optimization guide.

In our example, clarifying exports belongs in existing help. A guide to executing a large-scale migration might serve another task, but only with its own audience, evidence and utility. A brainstorming suggestion does not automatically approve a new page.

Track documentary completion without inventing a Google score

For this task, you can calculate a simple internal indicator: covered facets divided by in-scope facets. Preserve the other states; a contradiction does not count as half an answer for convenience.

The table has six in-scope facets and two covered: 2 out of 6, or 33.3% internal documentary coverage. The seventh is excluded. This is an editorial tracking example, not a demand estimate or a citation probability.

Add a separate critical-blocker check. Even if five of six facets were covered, a failure to separate projects could prevent recommending a trial for this agency. An average should not hide an indispensable condition.

If scope changes, keep the earlier version and explain the new denominator. Moving from two of six to two of four by removing work does not mean you closed two gaps.

Verify the change on two separate levels

First validate the document: the claim is visible, evidence supports the conclusion, pages agree, and language versions preserve the same limits. Someone uninvolved in the edit should be able to resolve the task without asking what you meant.

Then observe the AI surface with recorded conditions. Reuse a stable sample from your prompt bank, retain answers and links, and distinguish an isolated appearance from a comparable series.

The Search Console generative AI report provides another exposure layer. Do not turn an aggregate increase into proof that Google ran a particular subquestion or that a specific sentence caused the change.

You can improve coverage without observing more citations during the measurement window. Record both outcomes. The immediate goal is to close a verifiable information gap; any visibility effect needs its own measurement and is not guaranteed.

A worksheet for the next review

A shared record can contain these ten fields. It is an internal template, not a search engine configuration.

    text
    Task and decision:
    Audience and constraints:
    Scope version:
    Facet and acceptance condition:
    Owning URL and section:
    Evidence, provenance and date:
    State and critical blocker:
    Action and owner:
    Documentary verification:
    AI observation and limits:

Start with one important task. Review its pages, resolve outstanding facts and run the same worksheet again. If you generate twenty publishing opportunities before checking one claim, stop generating ideas and return to the evidence.

    FAQ

Can I see every subquery that AI Mode runs?

Do not treat a list produced by your team or another model as a Google execution log. In this audit, facets are editorial hypotheses; observed answers and links are stored as separate evidence with their test conditions.

Do I need a page for every subquestion?

No. If several formulations help resolve the same decision and share evidence, assign them to a section on the owning URL. Consider a standalone page only when it serves another task with an independently useful outcome.

Does mentioning an entity mean a facet is covered?

No. Evidence must answer the condition that matters to the user. Saying guests exist does not explain their permissions, costs or limits. Record the passage and check exactly which claim it supports.

Does the coverage percentage predict Google citations?

No. It is an internal indicator for your defined scope, not a Google metric or a probability of appearing. Also disclose the denominator, exclusions and critical blockers; do not hide those limits behind an average.

What should I do if two of my pages contradict each other?

Suspend the affected conclusion, identify the source and the person responsible for confirming the fact, and correct the relevant pages. Do not mark the facet as covered until the answer is consistent and its conditions are verifiable.

Can AI help prepare the matrix?

Yes, it can suggest facets and group formulations as working material. A person must remove duplicates, check the real task and verify every piece of evidence. Proposed questions and unsupported claims remain hypotheses, not findings.

Close the information gap and measure presence separately

The audit produces a decision for each facet: retain, clarify, test, correct or exclude. You do not need to know Google's internal searches to improve an incomplete answer.
