It's Not Enough to Show Up: Why Your Position in AI Responses Matters

Imagine you ask ChatGPT: "What are the best digital marketing agencies in Europe?" AI responds with a list of five options. Your brand appears… but in position number five, after four competitors. Victory or defeat?
The answer is clear: being first is not the same as being last. Just like nobody clicks on Google's result number 30, in AI responses attention focuses on the first mentions. Your position within the response determines whether a potential user considers you or ignores you completely.
The Google Analogy (But More Extreme)
In traditional SEO, the difference between position 1 and position 10 on Google is massive. The first result captures around 30% of clicks. The tenth, barely 2%. Result number 11, on the second page? Practically invisible.
In AI responses, the effect is even more pronounced. Why? Because there's no "second page." AI gives a single response with a limited number of recommendations. If it mentioned 5 brands, those are the only options the user sees. There's no "next" button or infinite scroll.
Additionally, users tend to read AI responses sequentially. The first brand mentioned receives the primacy effect: it's perceived as the main option, the strongest recommendation. Brands at the end of the list are perceived as complementary or secondary.
Your Position Changes by Model
One of the most surprising aspects of AI positioning is that it's not uniform across models. Your brand can have very different positions on each LLM:
- On ChatGPT you might appear at position #1, because OpenAI trained its model with sources where your brand has strong presence.
- On Claude you might drop to position #4, because Anthropic uses a different dataset and weighs other authority signals.
- On Gemini you might not appear at all, because Google integrates different signals, including data from its own search engine.
This variability means it's insufficient to test your brand on a single model and assume that result is representative. For a real picture, you need to analyze multiple models simultaneously.

Position doesn't only change between models. It also depends on:
Question Language If you ask in Spanish, LLMs tend to favor brands with Spanish-language content presence. If you ask in English, they favor brands from the English-speaking ecosystem. A European company might be #1 in Spanish responses and non-existent in English responses, or vice versa.
Question Type Asking "best options for X" isn't the same as "cheapest options for X" or "premium options for X." Each question type activates different associations in the model. Your brand might dominate in quality questions but disappear in price questions, or stand out in generic questions but not in specific niches.
Geographic Context "Best agencies in Spain" and "best agencies in Mexico" produce completely different results. LLMs are sensitive to geographic context and recommend different brands depending on the perceived market.
Measuring Mentions Isn't Enough: You Need to Measure Position
Many companies that start getting interested in their AI visibility settle for checking whether they appear or not. But this is only half the story. The two fundamental indicators are:
- Mention rate: what percentage of relevant questions your brand appears in. If out of 25 questions about your industry you appear in 10, your rate is 40%.
- Average position: when you appear, what position do you hold? An average position of 1.5 means you're almost always the first or second recommendation. An average position of 4.2 means you're at the end of the list.
The combination of both indicators gives you your real AI visibility. A high mention rate with a low average position is worse than it seems. A moderate mention rate with a constant #1 position can be more valuable.
