ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Perplexity: Which Recommends Your Brand

    2026-04-11·7 min read

You can have a well-optimized website, reviews on major directories and quality backlinks — and still be missing from Gemini's answers while a competitor appears first in ChatGPT.

That isn't necessarily a bug. These products work differently.

ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity combine model training with web search in different ways, use different search systems and present sources differently. What works for one may not carry over to another, so it helps to understand the main differences before deciding where to focus.

There is no single source every assistant relies on. Which sources appear varies by product, sector, question type and even between runs of the same question. Treat any study of citation patterns as a snapshot of its own sample and date, not a universal rule.

This guide explains, as far as the providers document it, how each product builds its answers and what your brand can work on for each one.

    How ChatGPT Builds Its Answers

ChatGPT answers from two layers: what the model learned during training, and live web search, which ChatGPT uses when a question needs current information or when the user asks for it. OpenAI changes models and features often, so check the current documentation.

Without search, the answer reflects what the model learned up to its training cutoff. With search, it can use and cite current pages. Your brand needs to do well in both: be widely and consistently described in public sources, and have crawlable pages that answer the questions people ask.

What tends to help in ChatGPT:

    • Mentions in reputable publications and industry blogs
    • Reviews across several third-party platforms
    • A consistent brand name across all sources (no variations)
    • Accurate, crawlable pages, including for OpenAI's search crawler (OAI-SearchBot)
    • Content that answers specific industry questions (not just product pages)

What matters less when ChatGPT answers without search:

    • Very recent content, which the model can't know about until a later update
    • Google ranking on its own (a brand can be well described in training data without ranking high on Google)

    The Search Factor

When ChatGPT searches the web, it can bring in recent content and show sources. In this mode, whether your pages can be found and crawled matters more, and it behaves more like Perplexity. Note that OAI-SearchBot (search) and GPTBot (training) are separate crawlers with separate robots.txt controls.

    How Gemini Builds Its Answers

Gemini is part of Google's ecosystem. It can ground answers in Google Search, and for local or shopping questions Google products can draw on data from Google Maps, Business Profiles and Shopping. How much of each appears in a given answer depends on the question and the product surface.

The practical consequence: your presence in Google's ecosystem is especially relevant for Gemini. An incomplete Business Profile, few reviews or pages Google hasn't indexed are more likely to show up as gaps here.

What tends to help in Gemini:

    • Complete and updated Google Business Profile (hours, photos, categories, description)
    • Volume and quality of Google reviews
    • Organic visibility on Google for relevant industry queries
    • Accurate schema markup (for example Organization, LocalBusiness, Product)
    • Google Maps presence if you have a physical location
    • Fresh, indexed content

What may matter less for Gemini:

    • Review platforms outside the Google ecosystem (TripAdvisor, Trustpilot), although they can still appear through search
    • Mentions in external media that Google hasn't indexed

    Why Gemini Can Surprise You

When Gemini grounds an answer in Google Search, newly indexed content can appear relatively quickly. That also means technical SEO issues — duplicate content, broken canonicals, pages not indexed — can affect what Gemini finds. Google-Extended, by the way, controls whether content is used for Gemini training and grounding; it doesn't affect Google Search ranking.

AI Overviews: Generative Answers Inside Google Search

AI Overviews are the AI-generated summaries above organic results in Google Search, powered by a customized Gemini model. They appear for a growing range of searches in many countries. They are a separate surface from the Gemini app, so measure them separately: being present in one doesn't guarantee the other.

    How Perplexity Builds Its Answers

Perplexity works as a conversational search engine: for most questions it searches the web, selects relevant passages and builds an answer with numbered citations and links.

Two implications. First, Perplexity normally shows its sources, so when it cites you the user sees a link to your site, which can generate traffic you can measure. ChatGPT and Gemini also show links when they search, but not always. Second, whether your pages are found by web search carries a lot of weight here.

What tends to help in Perplexity:

    • Visibility in web search results for sector queries
    • Up-to-date content with clear dates
    • Clear content structure (headings, lists, concrete data that's easy to extract)
    • Presence in sources such as media, specialized blogs and directories
    • Pages crawlable by PerplexityBot and quick to be discovered

    What matters less for Perplexity:

    • What the model learned in training, since most answers start with a search
    • Mentions in sources that aren't accessible on the web

Claude: A Model Used Heavily at Work

Claude, by Anthropic, has fewer consumer users than ChatGPT or Gemini, but it is widely used in professional contexts, especially by technical and knowledge workers. If your customers are technical or B2B buyers, it may matter more than its overall share suggests.

Claude's answers often add context and caveats rather than a bare list of brands. That's a tendency, not a rule, and it varies by question. Claude can also search the web when that feature is enabled.

What tends to help in Claude: in-depth, well-argued content, credible sources, sector analysis and technical documentation, plus pages accessible to Anthropic's crawlers (ClaudeBot for training, Claude-SearchBot for search, Claude-User for user-requested fetches).

Grok: The Model Connected to X

Grok, by xAI, can search posts on X (Twitter) as well as the web. If your brand publishes relevant content on X consistently, Grok may reflect it in contexts where other models wouldn't.

Its user base is smaller than ChatGPT's or Gemini's, but it's worth checking if your audience is active on X or you work in sectors where the conversation happens there (media, technology, finance, politics).

Comparison Table: ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Perplexity for Brands

This table summarizes general tendencies from the providers' documentation and observed behavior. It is qualitative, not a measured ranking; check it against your own results.

A Strategy That Works Across All Three

The fundamentals overlap. You don't need three separate strategies: a solid foundation plus some adjustments per product.

A foundation that helps across all three:

    • Consistent brand name across all platforms (website, directories, social, media)
    • Accurate schema markup (Organization, Product or Service depending on your business)
    • Presence in credible media and sources in your industry
    • Structured content that answers specific questions (not just product pages)
    • Genuine reviews across several platforms

    Adjustments per product:

For ChatGPT: earn mentions in reputable publications, industry directories and several review platforms, and allow OAI-SearchBot so search answers can use your pages. Long-term consistency matters.

For Gemini: prioritize your Google Business Profile, Google reviews and technical SEO so Google can find and index your pages.

For Perplexity: publish up-to-date, well-structured content that ranks for your industry queries, and make sure PerplexityBot can crawl it.

Where to Focus Based on Your Business Type

Priorities shift depending on your business model. Some practical starting points:

Local businesses (restaurants, clinics, hotels, services with a physical location): start with Gemini and Google's ecosystem — Business Profile, Google reviews and local SEO — and Perplexity for local directories and reviews. Check ChatGPT too, especially with search. See how GEO works for hospitality →

Ecommerce and online brands: review structured product data, Merchant Center and the feeds each assistant's shopping features accept, such as ChatGPT's Instant Checkout where available. Perplexity also matters for comparison questions. See GEO for ecommerce →

SaaS and technology: start with ChatGPT (G2/Capterra reviews, sector media) and Claude, which many technical buyers use. Perplexity for up-to-date content and comparisons. See GEO for SaaS →

Agencies and professional services: start with ChatGPT (credible media, published case studies) and Perplexity (current content that shows expertise). Gemini benefits from traditional SEO. See GEO for agencies →

How to Find Where You Have the Most Room to Improve

The reliable way is to measure your visibility in each model separately. A few manual tests aren't enough: answers vary between runs, the questions you choose shape the result, and without a consistent method you can't track trends or compare yourself with competitors.

Mentio analyzes your brand with prompts tailored to your industry. The report breaks down your visibility by model, your average position in each and your gaps against competitors. Model coverage depends on the plan: Free includes ChatGPT; Personal lets you choose one of the five models (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok or Perplexity), Pro two of the five, and Enterprise all five. Comparing all five models in the same analysis requires Enterprise.

The model-by-model report shows which models your plan includes.
